Nutrition Counseling for Substance Use Disorders

Substance use disorders (SUDs) often result in compromised nutritional status due to drastic changes in food and fluid consumption, narrowed food choices and accessibility, and complex metabolic disturbances. Restoring nutritional status has a profound positive impact on the success of treatment and lasting recovery yet navigating this process can be quite overwhelming. Allow us to help.

How We Can Help

Nutrition needs are unique.
Our dietitians at Nutritious Thoughts provide individual assessments, medical nutrition therapy (MNT), and personalized nutrition education to address the following issues that typically occur because of acute and chronic substance abuse and/or chemical dependency:

  • Malnutrition
  • Vitamin and mineral deficiencies
  • Dehydration
  • Abnormal weight loss/weight gain
  • Impaired immune system
  • Organ/digestive system damage
  • Disordered eating patterns and behaviors
  • Appetite-related medication side effects

The importance of proper nutrition in recovery.

The relationship between addiction and poor nutrition is intricate. Establishing balanced patterns of nourishment and movement early in the recovery journey can aid in relapse prevention and help to sustain the motivation needed for recovery efforts. Addressing disrupted eating and movement patterns in SUD recovery also supports the development of a self-care routine that clients can be confident about.

“Individualized nutrition counseling and comprehensive nutrition education programs provided to the substance abuse population have been found to significantly improve three-month sobriety success rates.”
Grant LP, Haughton B, Sachan DS. Nutrition education is positively associated with substance abuse treatment program outcomes. J Am Diet Assoc. 2004;104(4):604-610.
We work from a strong team approach and encourage clients to allow their dietitian to communicate with therapists, physicians, and other support team members to provide the most cohesive care possible.

Group settings – sharing experiences and learning together.

In addition to individualized nutrition counseling services, Nutritious Thoughts, LLC offers nutrition education to clients receiving support at SUD-related treatment and after-care centers across Western North Carolina. This education is typically delivered in a group setting, and our curriculum can be tailored to accommodate one-time or repeating visits as well as special topics of interest to the population. We also welcome the opportunity to have nutrition education sessions with staff and other support team members as well as friends/families of clients.

“Mental health professionals have found that recovering users maintain sobriety for longer periods of time and recover more quickly when provided with a nutrition program.”
