Ellen Birch, MS, RD, LDN
Outpatient Dietitian
(She/Her/Hers)
How would you describe your approach to nutrition counseling?
I take a person-centered, evidence-based approach to nutrition. Food is more than just calories or numbers; it is a vital source of nourishment for both body and mind. Research shows that when eating is clouded by shame or negativity, it can impact both physical and emotional well-being. My goal is to create a supportive, inclusive, and trauma-informed space where clients feel empowered, not restricted. I practice from a weight-neutral lens and strive to honor each person’s lived experience, culture, and values. I also welcome conversations about body image and how it may influence one’s relationship with food and health. I understand that nourishing oneself, especially while managing complex health conditions, can feel overwhelming. I work alongside clients with compassion, clarity, and a commitment to evidence-based care. Above all, I believe nutrition should enhance life, not limit it.
Which avenues of dietetics do you feel most passionate about pursuing?
I am passionate about supporting individuals in building a healthier relationship with food. Whether someone is navigating disordered eating patterns, managing a chronic condition or working through confusion around nutrition, I strive to provide compassionate, evidence-based guidance. I also have a strong interest in the recovery space, where I enjoy helping individuals in substance recovery use nutrition and lifestyle strategies as powerful tools to support healing and long-term well-being.
If you were to have any other profession other than Registered Dietitian, what would it be and why?
If I weren’t a Registered Dietitian, I would love to be a band director. I have a minor in music and grew up playing the clarinet, spending much of my time in both band and theatre during high school. Music continues to be a meaningful creative outlet for me, and I’m grateful for the joy, creativity, and sense of community it brings to my life.
Where can we find you when you’re not in client sessions?
When I’m not in sessions, you can usually find me at home with my guitar—either learning new songs or experimenting with creating music of my own. I also love exploring new walking and hiking spots out in nature. And when I’m out and about, I’m often on the hunt for hidden thrift store treasures and/or the best baked goods in town!
