Frequently Asked Questions

Have a question about our services?

Please see our most frequently asked questions below!

What will my dietitian and I talk about in our sessions?

The initial assessment is a collaborative session designed to understand your unique journey and how your dietitian can offer the most supportive guidance. We’ll explore various aspects of your life—like medical history, sleep patterns, mental well-being, and family history—to see how these different pieces impact your nutrition. This comprehensive view helps us co-create the most effective path forward for your upcoming sessions.

Follow-up sessions are highly individualized, but they all center on providing consistent support for sustainable, long-term nutrition practices that align with your specific needs and goals. These sessions can involve things like deepening your nutrition knowledge, gently exploring your relationship with food, and/or developing flexible meal strategies, among other empowering activities.

How often and for how long will I be meeting with my dietitian?

Most clients begin their journey with us through weekly sessions, as this really sets the stage for meaningful progress. However, we believe in personalized care, so the frequency is completely flexible based on your unique needs, the path you and your dietitian chart together, and of course, practical considerations like insurance and finances.

The length of care is also a very personal thing! It all depends on the level of nourishment and support you’re seeking. Most individuals value the consistency of a longer-term relationship with their dietitian to support deep, sustainable change.

Does Nutritious Thoughts accept my insurance?

We believe in making nutrition support accessible! We’re in-network with Blue Cross Blue Shield, Cigna, Aetna, United Health Care, Medcost, *Medicare Part B, Veterans Affairs Community Care Network (VA-CCN), and Blue Home with UNC Health Alliance EPO. If we’re out of network with your provider, we can still give you a superbill to submit for reimbursement. We’ll happily call your insurance to get a benefit quote (an estimate of coverage), but please remember it’s not a guarantee!

How do Nutritious Thoughts dietitians support individuals navigating eating disorders and/or disordered eating?

There is typically a recommendation for at least a year of dedicated support when navigating changing one’s relationship with food. At Nutritious Thoughts, we embrace a truly collaborative approach, meaning we work alongside you to co-create a personalized journey. This can involve tangible support like grocery planning and practical guidance on meals, but also deeper self-care strategies, developing a safety plan for managing the process, defining your personal support network (whatever “support” means to you), establishing planned structure around eating, offering education on topics like gentle movement, coordinating care with other providers, and working on healing your relationship with food and body. For individuals navigating eating disorders, our focus may sometimes shift away from discussing food directly, prioritizing instead the crucial mental health component and exploring the deeper “why’s” behind our behaviors.
